Inspired by legendary tales of illicit whisky making in the Scottish Highlands during the 18th and 19th centuries, The Illicit Still range captures a spirit of adventure in every scent. Each fragrance has been carefully curated to evoke the atmosphere of the era, while historical details on our beautiful copper tins share stories of illegal whisky making and the inspiration behind each scent.
Each tin is designed to echo elements of a whisky bottle and enhance the user experience. The 19th-century-style font, once used by distilleries, is rendered in gold to reflect the look of traditional whisky bottles. The top label features decorative scrollwork often found on whisky labels, while the Hamilton and Morris customs stamp and distillery signature assure the excise that our duty has been paid.

The Gaugers Approach
Still owners lived in fear of discovery by the Excise Men or ‘Gaugers’ , referring to the requirement to gauge how much malt a distiller used. Most Gaugers were outnumbered and poorly armed, providing little threat of violence. But confiscation of the valuable still equipment was a very valid threat. Distilling was often done at night to lessen the threat of the still fire smoke being detected. Lookouts were posted to forewarn and give time for dismantling and escape. ‘The Gaugers Approach’ tells of one such escape. The Gaugers are thwarted in their dawn raid. Our heroes spirit themselves away into the morning mists that cloak the glen. Safe in the knowledge that they will distil another day.
